Interview With Author Sofia Diana Gabel
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born in Sydney, Australia, but now live in the Pacific Northwest in the U.S. I’ve written eight novels, two novellas, numerous short stories, and have won a couple of writing awards. In recognition of my work, my novel “War and Money”, received an honorable mention in the 27th Annual Writer’s Digest Self Published Book Awards. I also won a short story writing contest for a full scholarship to the 2023 Santa Barbara Writers Conference.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Neanderball, a sci-fi/psychological thriller. I had the idea for the story while in a graduate archaeology class, and something my professor said triggered an idea. Neanderthals, he said, were built like football linebackers. So I thought, what would happen if Neanderthals were in the 21st century, playing in a football-like game? The story came together, with villains, twists and turns, and Neanderthals.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I try to write at least a few hours every day, and my special treat when I finish a first draft is to go to a local coffee shop for an oat milk chai latte.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Michael Crichton, Lily King, Colleen Hoover, James Patterson
What are you working on now?
I have two manuscripts in process. A murder mystery and an archaeological action/adventure.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I try to pick a couple of social media platforms, such as Facebook and instagram, and post as often as I can.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
If writing is your passion, stick with it and learn as much as you can. Watch YouTube videos, attend writing conferences, and definitely find critique partners. They’ll be your saving grace.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The more you read, the better you write.
What are you reading now?
Verity by Colleen Hoover
What’s next for you as a writer?
To finish up the two manuscripts I’m working on, then move on to others I have in my head.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Slow Horses, A Darker Side of Magic, Jurassic Park
