Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a wife and mom to two adult children. When my kids left for college, I purchased a Kindle and never looked back. Reading, once again, became my passion. I decided to dust off my writing skills from school and I wrote my first book in 2014. Since then, I have written 4 more books and one novella.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Finding Karma is about a young girl who feels lost in her boyfriend’s shadow, not really knowing what to do with her life after high school. My daughter inspired this story – I didn’t like how she was turning into someone just for her boyfriend’s sake. This is a story that highlights how the girl doesn’t follow the boy, putting herself first, even though the stakes may be high. Moral of the story? It all works out in the end. And my daughter came to her senses and she is a forceful young woman now.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t write with an outline like most writers do. I have a beginning, a middle, and an end in mind and I let the characters dictate the story as I go. Sometimes it changes direction and that’s okay.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Tarryn Fisher’s words have a way of grabbing you and wringing you out until you can hardly stand it. Her characters are the most real, flawed, gritty people I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Her mind fascinates me.
What are you working on now?
I am working on a story about a married woman who has an emotional affair with a young man 15 yrs. her junior who unknowingly shows her just what she’s been missing in her marriage for years.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
In a sea of ever-growing book releases, promoting proves frustrating. But I find Facebook and Instagram to be helpful.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t compare yourself to anyone. You need to find your own voice and your own writing style.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
It’s easy to get caught up in when you might get noticed – when a book might take off. The best advice that I’ve received time and time again is to keep looking forward. Write your next book. And then the next one. Just always keep writing.
What are you reading now?
The Hawks by SD Hendrickson
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m hoping to do my first signing in 2019. That would be a big step for me. And, of course, I’m going to keep writing.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Tarryn Fisher’s Love Me With Lies Series (The Opportunist, Dirty Red, and Thief) and F*ck Love, also by Tarryn Fisher.
