Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I wrote my first book four years ago and haven’t stopped. When my kids went to college I read book after book. Realizing how much I missed writing when I was younger, I thought I’d dust off my long-forgotten skills. I’ve just finished my seventh book.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Unclaimed Regrets is being released on October 15th. I’m such a sucker for people re-connecting at a high school reunion – or even two people who never dated and were friends but found chemistry at their tenth or twentieth class reunion. There is something really romantic about that, I think.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t write with any kind of outline. I take notes on my characters and scenes I want to incorporate but my writing comes as I type. Sometimes my characters will take me on a path I had no intention of taking. It feels more natural to me.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love the grit and raw emotions that Tarryn Fisher evokes in her readers. She has a way of drawing me into anything she writes.
What are you working on now?
I’m in the editing stages of a women’s fiction (romance involved) about a 39-year-old woman who finds solace and friendship in a man nearly fifteen years her junior and ends up having an emotional affair with him. They go their separate ways after a bit and then tragedy brings them back together. She must go through all the stigma attached to dating a much younger man, especially in the eyes of her children.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Promoting is impossible!! I try FB, Twitter, and Instagram. Don’t know how much good they do though.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t compare yourself to other authors. Write and find your voice – find your style. But don’t harp on the successes of others. It’s not about that. It’s about finding your own audience and putting your work out there for the world to read.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
To not dwell on each book you just finished. Sure, we all have to go through the painstaking motions of attempting to sell our books, but it’s more important to keep writing. Finish your next book – then your next. Just keep going…
What are you reading now?
I’m ready You by Caroline Kepnes so I can watch it play out on the Lifetime channel.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I think I might try writing a young readers’ chapter book. I have several nieces and nephews who are enthralled with my writing a book and I want to give them something they can read.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Love You With Lies Series by Tarryn Fisher: The Opportunist, Dirty Red, and Thief.
