I have written and published three books, two of which are children’s book and one is a journal for adults. What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book in production, scheduled for release at the end of summer if, A Home for Sally. I was inspired to write this book after watching multiple television shows that featured healthy canines, and the requests for adoption. However, on most of whom I never observed them showing a dog with a disability. This is what caused me to write, A Home for Sally; which shares her struggle of having a handicap, and how she is often overlooked for adoption because of her disability.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wouldn’t consider myself to have any unusual habits; however, I do not write on a daily basis. The inspiration for my writings can come when I’m washing the dishes, driving in the car or sometimes when I’m playing with my grandchildren. This is why I often have a resource available to put my thoughts down on paper.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Since I categorize myself as a children’s author, two books have influenced my life. One is, Little Engines Can Do Big Things, by Britt Allcroft. It is a reflection of although you consider yourself small compared to others, you can perform big tasks. The second is Brave New World by Aldous Huxley an adventure of entering into a foreign place. Which I considered myself to be when writing my first children’s book; publishing was a very unfamiliar world to me. I also enjoy reading anything written by John C. Maxwell. His books are ones I reread and take notes from.
What are you working on now?
Currently, I am in production with the release of my book A Home for Sally; while also working on a moral lesson children’s series.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Several methods are used for promoting my books: social media, my website, face-to-face sales and requests for interviews; such as this one.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
The best advice I would offer a new author is to establish an Author’s Business Plan. We as authors’ can become so engrossed in the process of “only writing” that you sometimes forget that there are other components to writing. One of which is marketing, which is a necessity. So before, during and after establish your plan and make changes whenever necessary.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Best, the advice I’ve received is to be patient with myself. I am sometimes in a hurry to complete a something that I become overwhelmed and frustrated. Therefore, stressed out unnecessarily.
What are you reading now?
For the past month, I have been reading with a book study group. The book when have been reading and studying from is The Call: Finding and Fulfilling the Central Purpose of Your Life by Os Guinness. This is been an interesting process because each group member is required to do homework and share their findings during the next session. It is an eye opener for not only myself but others in the reading group, because past mistakes are shared and how to learn from each of them.
What’s next for you as a writer?
As a former educator, I enjoyed teaching. So currently I am reaching out to; elementary schools and other community organizations regarding teaching a class on the publishing process. As a former educator, I enjoyed teaching. So currently I am reaching out to; elementary schools and other community organizations regarding teaching a class on the publishing process. Sharing with them my journey, as well as, instructing them on how to not only write a literature work but also how to publish.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Well, any romance novel would be is necessary, because I am a romantic at heart. Others would include anything by John C. Maxwell and The White House Years, A Mandate for Change which has been on my bookshelf for years and me yet to complete reading.
