Interview With Author Stephanie Thoma
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I help people and companies connect with confidence through networking, public speaking and building community. I’ve published 2 books at this time (December 2024) and can see myself as publishing more.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Not That Sweet, was inspired by what it means to be a sweet girl, or woman. It’s a memoir about identity, labels, institutions and reclaiming a sense of self and authenticity that can be celebrated when in the right environment.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When it comes to writing a book I tend to go about it in spurts but also with a daily minimum word count or time, and start with a series of stream-of-consciousness articles and then am able to find a through line and combine them into an outline.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
This particular book was influenced by my experience reading a plethora of memoirs to get an idea of the tonality I wanted my memoir to embody. Examples of ones I found to be most resonant in how they expressed their stories and message included: I’m Glad My Mom Died and Paris: The Memoir.
What are you working on now?
My book came out about a month ago and I have periodically been dipping into a draft for a third book, but mostly planning to do LESS in 2025, including honing in on Youtube and spending less time online in general.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
stephaniethoma.com/books
or my amazon author page
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Do not get caught up in the topic you write about defining you for your entire life. Get started with a story you know at some point you want to tell, or what you feel you have accumulated experience or expertise in, in this life chapter, while it’s fresh.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
To take a pause before engaging with someone until it comes from a clear, calm, confident place.
What are you reading now?
Be. by Jessica Z. about personal branding on audio and Worthy by Jaime the founder of It Cosmetics in hardcover.
What’s next for you as a writer?
As a writer, I will continue to create content on Youtube, journal and put effort into book 3, which I estimate will come out in 2026.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Likely mindset books to help get through that ordeal! A few favorites include: my 1st book Confident Introvert to remind myself how to socialize when I return from the island, and certainly something by Esther Hicks, Wayne Dyer and Sonia Choquette.
