Interview With Author Stuart Stromin
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am an award-winning South African-American writer and filmmaker in Los Angeles. I was educated at Rhodes University, South Africa, the Alliance Francaise de Paris, and UCLA. I have published three novels, one book of short stories, and one poetry chapbook. My latest novel is Wild Cards (Close2theBone Publishing), my recent poetry book is Sea of Troubles (Bottlecap Press), and my collection of short stories is called subspace.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
subspace is a collection of kinky tales and stories which range from playful to poetic, and always provocative. It is about people who will sacrifice everything to gratify their obsessions, fetishes and desires. Some stories are as short as flash fiction, and some are almost novellas. Each short story stands alone but as the reader ventures deeper into the book, it becomes more and more unsettling, even disturbing.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write mostly at night, and polish in the morning.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I am still stuck in the classics, Dickens, Dostoevsky, Conrad, Twain, Steinbeck, Camus, Shakespeare, but once in a while, a contemporary treat like Elmore Leonard.
What are you working on now?
I am halfway through a new political thriller, which is a post-Hamas look at religion. (As you can see, I don’t shy away from controversial subjects)
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Free review copies
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t worry if you write crap – you can fix it later.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Mark Twain says that on your deathbed you will not regret the things you have done, but the things you have not done.
What are you reading now?
Dabbling with The Devils by Dostoevsky because I am using it as reference for the new novel I am writing.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I have another collection of short stories which I want to publish, about race this time, and I need to finish the novel I am working on.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Pickwick Papers, the complete works of Shakespeare, the Bible, and a survival guide.
