About Sudoku Island by Darlene Thomson
10-year-old Kiwi Kahu is resisting trying to make the most of his new stepfamily dynamics. Instead of joining in, he seeks the solitude and comfort of designing sudoku puzzles. His anti-social addiction finds him transported to Sudoku Island, at first a seemingly perfect other-worldly paradise, where he meets fellow sudoku puzzlers from around the world and different eras. Their tragic lives make his own life seem not so bad after all. Kahu befriends clever, Australian 13-year-old Derek who has been marooned on the island for three years. Together, they plan their escape.
