Interview With Author Suzy Davies
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a writer of fairytales. Ever since I was a child, I have loved them! I hail from a teaching, coaching and counseling background, and these experiences inform all that I write. I love seeing the world through children’s and young people’s eyes!
Florida is my home state where there is a profusion of wildlife that brings me great joy. I love nature. I live in a town not far from Disney with my husband and a very mischievous cat named Dinky.
When I’m not writing you’ll find me walking nature trails, sitting in coffee shops, or mall-shopping. I love watching movies and music is a huge influence on my writing. Lyrics often provide a starting point for scenes, settings and characters or the atmosphere of my books. I have written 12 books so far.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My new book is “Housie Mousie and The Big Cheese.” It was inspired by ‘The Wind in The Willows” and by my childhood walks with my dad along rivers where we went fishing and messing about in boats. Dad was a BIG cheese-lover, and so am I, so it seemed fitting to write about The Big Cheese Roll – a real life event in the Gloucestershire of my childhood days where Grandpa lived.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t think so. I enjoy listening to music as I write – maybe not every writer does that, but I find it helps me with flow.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Many writers have inspired my work, the most important ones being Hans Christian Andersen, Charles Perrault, J.K. Rowling, Isabel Allende, Kenneth Grahame, Beatrix Potter, Michael Bond, Tolkein, A.A.Milne, E.B.White, Kipling, Shakespeare, Virginia Woolf, Hardy, Daphne Du Maurier, Scott Fitzgerald and Antoine de St Expury. Sheila Graber, author in her own write and world-acclaimed artist, movie maker and animator is a huge and enduring influence on me for which I am very grateful. We created “Luna The Moon Pig” together and continue to collaborate.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on a sequel to “Housie Mousie and The Big Cheese.” It’s a lot of fun.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I like LinkedIn, but I try to promote across several sites and pay it forward by engaging with readers.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just write! That’s it. Write every day. The more you write (and read) the better you will get.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Believe in yourself.
What are you reading now?
I am reading Patricia Cornwell’s new book, “Unnatural Death.” The subject matter is in stark contrast to anything I would write, and her writing style feels journalistic to me. The pacing is superb. I admire the way in which she researches all the details so thoroughly before putting pen to paper. You can tell there’s a good brain ticking away behind the writing. It challenges readers. I’m really enjoying it so far.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Who knows?
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, The Hobbit, and The Great Gatsby.
