Interview With Author Sylva Kanderal
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi. Maybe it is my natural curiosity that has guided my whole life. Born in former Czechoslovakia, I left the country, built a new life in Switzerland, got my second medical degree, ran my dental practice in Zurich, and took care of my two children. It was not always easy. I was a single mom. Mom and Dad in one. I discovered a lot on my travels and met many people who broadened my horizons. I am endlessly grateful for that. I have published several professional publications and written eight novels. I also painted and exhibited my works in Europe and America. I got some awards for my work.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The last book is called MAGIC OF CHANGE. The inspiration came after my visit to Rio de Janeiro, seeing the children sleeping at the doorsteps and the unbelievable atmosphere of Carnival of Rio, dance, music and joy. I put it together. A story of love and live.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t think. I am a simple woman and I take day by day and enjoy everything.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
There are a lot. Milan Kundera ( Author of Unbearable Lightness of Being) was probably the one I admired most. But there are amazing writers in the World. Just now I read Ken Follett’s The Armor of Light.
What are you working on now?
There is a young guy. He was real. He was in prison from the age of fifteen for six years. How can a teenager feel in solitary? He was a rebel and was mentally a kid. I gave him a chance in the book, and he had a wonderful voice. And the future. Maybe it is the classic change from bad to good. Why not?
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
This is my biggest problem. I have two doctoral degrees from two universities in two languages, but I have a complete lack of knowledge in informatics and marketing. This, with your page, is my first step in a new direction. Thanks for the possibility.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Everybody has their own thought and ideas. Put it on paper and give never up.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t complain. Tell every time you are fine, all is good. Your friends like this answer and you make your enemies with this not happy. And by the time this positive attitude will be automatically a part of you. I know it well. I got this advice.
What are you reading now?
Ken Follett – The Armor of Light
What’s next for you as a writer?
I have a historical fantasy project in my head. It will not be easy, but it will be challenging.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
A picture book about artistic Paris from 1900. Crazy live and unbelievable music, painters, and poets. Maybe a Bible, but for sure no cookbook.
