Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a stay-at-home mom and pro bono lawyer, but writing has always been one of my favorite hobbies. I’ve written four books, but this is the first one I’ve published.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Elissa Blue was inspired by a passage in Cornelia Funke’s Inkheart talking about fairies having either dragonfly or butterfly wings. It made me think of the insects I’d been studying (entomology is another hobby), and how fun it would be to have a science fiction explanation for fairies: humans with butterfly wings and some of the oddities of insects (like a pupa state, migration, pheromones, and short reproductive periods).
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I must have complete silence. If anyone is talking or even singing a song, I will accidentally type their words or lyrics instead. So I wait for everyone to go to bed before I write.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Wilkie Collins, Thomas Hardy, Janette Rallison, Betsy Brannon Green, and Robison Wells are my favorites, but it’s fantasy books like Howl’s Moving Castle and Spindle’s End that have probably influenced me the most.
What are you working on now?
I’m almost done with the second book in The Winged series and hope to publish it within a year.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I don’t know! I am brand new to marketing and stumbling my way through it. Ask me again in a few months. π
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Kindle and Kobo make ebook publishing quick and easy; if you’re self-publishing, start there.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“No misfortune is so bad that whining about it wonβt make it worse.” –Elder Jeffrey R. Holland
What are you reading now?
Configured by Jenetta Penner and To the Rescue: The Biography of Thomas S. Monson by Heidi Swinton
What’s next for you as a writer?
Figure out how Book Two in The Winged series ends. π
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
My scriptures and non-fiction books about how to survive on a desert island. π
