Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi. I’m Tara Lain and i write the Beautiful Boys of Romance — unique, charismatic heroes in contemporary and paranormal MM romance. Quarterbacks and cops, werewolves and witches, blue collar or billionaires, my characters love deeply, resolve seemingly insurmountable differences, and ultimately live their lives authentically. I have 50 published books, many of them in audio and translations as well. I live in Ashland, Oregon with my soulmate husband and my soulmate dog. I’m likely a Gryffindor or maybe a Ravensclaw but possessed of Parseltongue. I love animals of all kinds, diversity, open minds, coconut crunch ice cream from Zoeys, and my readers.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My next release is LOVE AND LINGUISTICS, my contemporary, MM homage to My Fair Lady. It was a real labor of love because i rewrote it several times over 2 years, which is very unusual for me. The challenge was that i started thinking of My Fair Lady as a sweet romcom and then realized that someone who doesn’t have a place to feel safe or enough to eat just isn’t a comedy. Still, the book comes out far more romantic that the play and i am very happy with how it came out. It’s on preorder at Dreamspinner Press right now and will be released Nov 26, 2019.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Because i started as a nonfiction marketing writer in a busy office, i trained myself to write with noise, conversations and even television playing. But i can’t listen to music! Somehow music is the one thing that interferes with my right-brain writing. I also write from start to finish editing a bit as i go and, generally, when i finish the draft, I’m very close to finished with the book.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I became a MM romance writer by accident! I was writing my first book, had just started, and read a book by a favorite author, Jet Mykles. The books i had read previously by Jet were M/F romances, but i ordered a new book without paying much attention to the story or blurb, and when it came i discovered to my amazement that it was a story about 2 men! I read the book and fell in love with the dynamic, the lack of gender roles, and much more. That was 50 books ago. I’d say Jet had a big influence!
What are you working on now?
My current story is called BETTER RED and it’s the first book in a new series taking place in a mystical small town in New York where amazing things happen much like fairy tales you might have read. The stories will be contemporary with a heavy dose of magic.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I love my newsletter and FB Reader Group, HEA, Magic and Beautiful Boys. Readers can subscribe to my newsletter at

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Yes, having a backlist is the thing that will propel you as an author because readers have more than one book to buy, but building an author brand identity at the same time you build your backlist is also important because when you have something to buy, you want someone ready to buy it.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
In order to have something i’ve never had, I must be willing to do what I’ve never done.
What are you reading now?
I’m an audiobook freak so i listen. I’m currently listening to some books in the Firsts and Forever Series by Alexa Land and i always go back to the Her Royal Spyness series by Rhys Bowen.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Most of my 50 books are traditionally published. After all that, i’m planning to do more self-publishing while i’m staying traditionally published. That means i have MUCH to learn. LOL
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Oh wow! I’d definitely take Pride and Prejudice, The Importance of Being Earnest plus other plays by Oscar Wilde in collection, The Bhagavad Gita, and a wonderful romance by one of a hundred favorite authors!
