Interview With Author Tara Orfani
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live in Victoria, BC and I am 28 years old. I’ve written 3 books and I am in the process of writing a fourth, all of which are lgbt fantasy.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest complete book or my latest book in general? My latest complete novel was called SHADOWCHASERS and it was the third book in a trilogy called the Two Worlds trilogy. That particular book in the series was inspired by the Fallen by Thomas E Sniegoski with the idea of a battle between heaven and hell but with an evil that’s worse than the Devil.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
People have told me that it’s unusual to not outline my books. What I do instead is when I get inspiration for a novel I usually start out writing excerpts for it among my other writing projects. Then when I want to actually put together the book, I fill in the blanks between excerpts and edit them
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I was quite influenced by Sherrilyn Kenyon’s writing in the league series and dark hunters series. Also, as previously mentioned, Thomas E Sniegoski. And Alex Kahler is an amazing author. If I can write books as good as Runebinder, I will be happy.
What are you working on now?
A book I’m calling Child of Calamity. It’s a dark male/male fantasy loosely inspired by the Rifer by Ginn Hale about a man who’s destined to become a hero but can’t seem to stop being a villain.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Well, nothing’s worked all the time but the thing that’s gotten me the most sales was this promotion I did through a facebook group called fantasy/sff books fan club. But it also cost me like 500$ so I wouldn’t recommend that unless you have that kind of capital.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
If you are planning to publish, it’s not about how good your book is. It’s about how well you promote it.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I’ve never really heard much advice about writing that I can remember
What are you reading now?
I just finished a book called In the Black by Lyra Evans for the second time. It was the third book in a series called Evergreen that I don’t know why I like because there’s so many things in it that just make me cringe. Yet I cackle a lot while reading it.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Once I finish my current project, I’m going to try to enter it into some contests to get published because I don’t want to self-publish again. It’s quite expensive and you have to do the marketing yourself largely.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Oh, that’s a really difficult question. I love so many books. But if I had to choose just 3 or 4, I would probably choose Runebreaker by Alex Kahler, and the entire Wicked Saints trilogy by Emily A Duncan.
