About Ten Days One Guernsey Summer
Set against the backdrop of a world at war, “Ten Days in One Guernsey Summer” is a poignant blend of fact and fiction, chronicling the harrowing yet inspiring journey of Laurence and Lily, a couple living in Guernsey during the brink of Nazi occupation in June 1940. As the shadows of war loom over the serene landscape of the island, the couple faces an agonizing decision that will forever alter the course of their lives.
The narrative unfolds over the ten days leading up to the occupation, a period marked by uncertainty, fear, and a desperate struggle for survival. The couple’s ordeal is set in motion when they must send their daughter away to England with her school, a heart-wrenching separation that sees her fatefully ending up in Scotland. The story delves deep into the emotional turmoil and resilience of Laurence and Lily as they grapple with the impossible choice between staying in their homeland or venturing into the unknown in the UK with their small children.
Amidst the chaos, a harsh reality dawns upon them: the likelihood of Laurence being unable to secure passage for himself. The narrative poignantly explores the themes of love, sacrifice, and survival as the couple weigh their options, each fraught with its own set of dangers and uncertainties. The pressing question of what Laurence’s fate would be if he were to stay alone on the island adds a layer of suspense and urgency to their decision-making.
Parallel to Laurence and Lily’s story, the book intricately weaves the life of a German pilot, offering a multifaceted view of the war. This pilot, destined to play a role in the tragic raid on St. Peter Port harbour, brings a contrasting perspective to the narrative, highlighting the complexities and moral ambiguities of war.
“Ten Days in One Guernsey Summer” is more than a story of survival; it’s a testament to the enduring human spirit in the face of overwhelming adversity. It invites readers to ponder the question: What would you have done in the same circumstances? This thought-provoking tale not only pays homage to the author’s grandparents but also sheds light on a significant, yet often overlooked, chapter of World War II history.

Author Bio:
Tony Brassell was born and raised in Guernsey during a time when the scars of occupation during the second world war were still fresh to see and imprinted on the minds of the residents. He began writing after his grandparents passed away, keen to preserve their story and explain the desperate choices that had to be made just before the occupation in the summer of 1940. Since then, he has written another eight novels, and more are on the way. Tony loves to tell a story and has ventured into science fiction and has created a detective series, all published through Amazon. Married and still living in Guernsey, Tony had to relinquish a lifelong interest in playing Golf due to a spinal condition which makes it difficult for him to walk. However, the time that has been freed up from golf, now has been invested in writing. Tony also produces an annual Guide to Guernsey and has a series of local children’s stories in his portfolio. He would love to see Ten Days One Guernsey Summer on screen and has begun work on a screenplay. As well as writing he likes to paint, make models, build and maintain websites and when the weather and tides permit, potter around the Islands of Guernsey in his small boat. Tony is officially retired but doesn’t seem to have enough time to be retired. Anyway, none of us know just how much time we have left, so wasting it is a bit of a sin. Tony and his wife love to travel and copies of his books have been left in the libraries of several cruise ships over the years.
