Interview With Author Terri Dixon
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live in New England in Northwestern Connecticut, but I spent the other half of my life in Northern Indiana, giving me a wide spectrum of places to write about. I've traveled to 19 countries around the world and have a particular knowledge and love of Russian history and culture. I studied English and Journalism at Manchester University and Central Connecticut State University. I've traveled to 41 states with friends and family in a lot of them. I have eight self published novels on Amazon and Kindle, with "Greenville, Dynasty of the North Woods" being my bestseller.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My new release is "Bourbon." This is "Book 2 of the Every Woman has a Story" series. I've been writing women's stories lately, and "Bourbon" was inspired by a lot of women I know who pretty much ran from home after high school to make a better life. I wanted to write a story where later on, the protagonist had to come back and deal with the family she left behind.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I'm not disciplined at all. I write when I feel like it, which fortunately is a lot of the time. I do pretty much have to be in my office. Ideas come to me everywhere.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
"Little Women" made me want to be a writer. I read it when I was 8, and have been writing ever since. I've been influenced by many writers. Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Clancy, Edna Buchanan, Janet Evanovich, and Christopher Moore come to mind immediately. Diverse, but some of my favorites.
What are you working on now?
I'm working on two stories right now. "Calypso" is "Book 3 of the Every Woman has a Story" series. She's the first head coach in the NFL. I'm also working on Greenville II, the Arrival of Winter" which is the second Greenville story and no less bizarre and fast paced than the first. It's another thriller with a family saga component in the wilds of Maine.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I've had good luck with several sites to be honest. I use different ones for different genres. I've consistently used AllAuthor, which is a fabulous self promotion site. I've also used Book Raid, Book Lemur, Awesome Gang, and Book Adrenaline; depending on genre.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don't give up. Most authors don't become a sensation overnight. Keep writing. Keep submitting. Keep learning about the business. Take free webinars. Use every opportunity you run across. Perseverance is the only way to success.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I was once told by a traditionally published author that I quite admire to take every rejection as a challenge. "Oh yeah, you didn't like that? I'll show you." And keep working.
What are you reading now?
I'm ready "Lessons in Chemistry" by Bonnie Garmus. I recommend this to anyone who reads. Fabulous story.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I don't know really. I have a chance to pitch to some agents coming up next month. Very hopeful. I have some more webinars for advice coming up. I have two books in the works. I plan to just keep plugging away until someone gives me a break.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Lessons in Chemistry, Breakfast of Champions, Two for the Dough, and The Hunt for Red October
