About The Blue Macaw by Ricky Ginsburg
The Blue Macaw is the first in a series of crime novels featuring Detective Valarie Garibaldi, a cancer survivor who’s lost her ovaries and her hair, and has decided to stay bald, seeking a low maintenance lifestyle. Her mother died in childbirth and her father, a twenty-five-year veteran of both Newark and Fort Lauderdale PD, was shot and killed on the job, the day before she graduated high school, two days after her eighteenth birthday. Now, at twenty-seven, she’s living his dream.
The 70,000-word murder mystery opens with a dead bird–a rare blue macaw–that’s stuffed with diamonds and ends with a Chinese quarterback joining the Jacksonville Jaguars. The story, based in South Florida, with side-trips to New York City and Jacksonville, Florida, introduces a cast of characters that will carry the next four plots and beyond. Her boyfriend, the first since cancer surgery and chemo, is a black Fort Lauderdale cop named Benjamin Franklin; call him Ben for short. And her partner’s a forty-nine-year-old Cuban lesbian, who wears Capri pants and flowered shirts.

His writing comes from a lifetime of experiences, both normal and bizarre with heavy leanings toward the latter. Simply put, Ricky Ginsburg is one of those writers who sees a flock of birds heading south for the winter and wonders what they talk about on their journey. While much of his writing has elements of magical realism and humor, he also has a serious side, but keeps it in a small plexiglass box under his desk.
When he’s not writing, gardening, cooking, hiking, biking, traveling, taking photographs, eating massive quantities of sushi and barbecue, he enjoys mediation and chocolate egg creams. Despite a forced existence from birth until age eighteen that revolved around suburbia, Chinese takeout, and puberty, Ricky has managed to set foot on six of the seven continents, survived the loss of two wives, and eaten jellied monkey brains three times in search of the perfect flavor profile.
