Author Bio:
On my way to becoming a writer, I worked as a fire alarm salesman, a college bookstore manager, a metallurgy lab technician, an IRS auditor, a park caretaker, a school bus driver, a library aide, a special education teacher, and a high school detention room supervisor. The varied work experience, and the personal interaction with people from different walks of life it occasioned, has served me well as a writer. My short fiction has appeared in literary journals and anthologies. My first novel, “Tamara’s Child,” inspired by my experiences working with at-risk youth, won the 2011 Eric Hoffer Award in the Young Adult book category and was named a finalist in the Popular Fiction category of the 2010 National Indie Excellence Book Awards. My second novel, “The Water Tower Club,” was awarded a bronze medal in the Popular Fiction category of the 2019 Independent Publisher Book Awards and was named a finalist in the Crime Fiction category of the National Indie Excellence Book Awards. Although I write mostly fiction, my newspaper column “Now That I Think About It” (since retired) afforded me an outlet for my non-fiction. My wife and I live in an area of southwestern Oregon known as the Hundred Valleys of the Umpqua. To learn more about me you can visit my website www.bkmayo.com.
