About The Ever Faithful Isle: A Novel of Old Cuba
19th-century Cuba comes vividly to life as the Fortez family fights to save its hard-won foothold on imperial Spain’s ‘Ever Faithful Isle.’ In an intriguing blend of history and fiction, the destinies of a diverse range of characters from Spain, Cuba, and the United States converge in the decades leading up to and including the Spanish-American War.
Spanish cavalry officer Rodrigo Fortez, in exchange for his solemn oath, claims ownership of a struggling Cuban tobacco estate. As he and his determined wife Isabella labor to make the farm prosper, Capitán Fortez must hunt and destroy a shrewd rebel leader wreaking havoc in the countryside.
Spirited Gabriella Valdes, a fieldworker at the Fortez farm, catches the eye of Ignacio, Rodrigo’s impulsive youngest son. When the two begin a liaison threatening the Fortez legacy, matriarch Isabella Fortez aggressively intervenes. Ignacio’s shocking, last-ditch attempt to reclaim Gabriella unleashes a chain of cataclysmic consequences.
Egged on by rival American newspapers, the United States and Spain plunge into war. Karl, a young news correspondent, lands in Cuba with the American invasion force. While covering the famed Buffalo Soldier and Rough Rider regiments as they advance on Spanish forces, he becomes drawn inextricably into the fate of Familia Fortez.
From colonial Cuba’s lush tobacco fields and swaying palms to bitter betrayal and savage combat, ‘The Ever Faithful Isle’ is an epic of love, tradition, ambition, and honor caught in the crosshairs of violent, tumultuous times.
