About The Insanity Inspectors
The Insanity Inspectors
A story about lunacy and where to find it.
1858
The first Lunacy Commissioners are appointed.
Scotland’s ‘insanity inspectors’ travel the country, deciding who can stay at home and who needs to be sent to an asylum.
But not every lunatic can be classified as insane and not everyone who is insane is a lunatic.
Dr Lennox Cameron, a new inspector, juggles his time between the shocking and intense role of inspecting the conditions of many lunatics in the Scottish Highlands, and living with his opportunist uncle and aunt, scheming their way into Edinburgh’s polite society.
As the search for the causes and cures for insanity becomes more desperate, the lines between what is right and what needs to be done become blurred. Lennox is forced to make decisions about his own sanity and his future. He will pay a price for being an honourable man, choosing purpose over achievement as a physician.
Dr Peter Baird has darker motives for treating the insane. He has found a reliable way to profit from lunacy. In the end he will pay a very different price.
This story is based on real cases and real events.

“A combination of fictional novel, documentary and extrapolation of research makes for an interesting read, which often had me reaching out to the internet. to determine which was which!” Book of the Week, THE COURIER.
“It’s sometimes hard to tell where fact ends and fiction begins. A fascinating and highly readable novel. Campbell’s imaginative flights are as wickedly convincing as his historically accurate detail.” Book Review by THE HERALD.
All four books are available in paperback and Kindle format; Sailor’s Heart is also on Audible.
Martin has worked as a psychologist, teacher, university lecturer and window cleaner. Besides writing, he also enjoys sea fishing and playing poker, with little returns on either of these activities. He was born in Greenock, and lives in Fife.
