Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Well, I’m a senior in college majoring in Finance and English. I’ve been writing for about seven years now, and I just self-published my very first book on January 22 of this year. My favorite genres are sci-fi, mystery/thriller, and urban fantasy, and I hope to get books out in all those genres at some point in my career.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest (and first) book is Echoes, a sci-fi mystery novel. It’s the first in a planned series. Hm, what inspired it? Wish I knew, to be honest. It just popped into my head one day. I was coming off the failure of another sci-fi novel, and I was very frustrated. I knew I needed something else to work on, and then…Echoes.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I repeatedly rewrite the first 5000 words of all my stories until I feel I get it “right.” For me, a beginning is what I use to gauge the tone and style of the whole story, so I never feel ready to move on until the beginning is polished enough for my tastes.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Hm. I’d say Stephen King, Garth Nix, Jim Butcher, and Aldous Huxley.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on the sequel to Echoes, called Epitaphs, and a contemporary mystery/thriller with some minor paranormal/fantasy elements, called Rivet Town.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
That’d be my own blog, Knite Writes. I post book reviews, writing/reading/publishing posts, short fiction, and poetry there. It’s where my work gets maximum exposure simply because the variety of content on my blog gives me a bigger reach than anywhere else.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep writing. And while you’re at it, keep reading. You probably get that advice all the time, but that’s because it’s the truth. You learn writing by writing and reading. And the only way you succeed is to never give up.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The same advice I just gave to new authors. I heard it myself over and over again in my early writing days, and I’ve never found anything more truthful.
What are you reading now?
Um…hah. I’ve got a stack of 28 books sitting next to me right now. Let me get back to you when I actually figure out which one to read.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Hopefully, many sales. Realistically, more writing, some successes and some failures, and a whole lot of editing.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
No idea. I’d have to throw all the titles into a hat and randomly select a few.
