Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve written four books. Three I co-wrote and published with Nation Books. This is my first foray into self-publishing. (I needed a shorter lead time for publishing a book about Trump, who is a moving target, to say the least.)
My first three books were “Sweet Jesus, I Hate Bill O’Reilly,” “Fair and Balanced, My Ass! An Unbridled Look at the Bizarre Reality of Fox News” and “Brotherhood of the Disappearing Pants: A Field Guide to Conservative Sex Scandals.”
I wrote my latest under a pseudonym, because Trump is f*cking crazy.
I’m a big political junkie and a dyed-in-the-wool liberal.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Dear F*cking Lunatic: 101 Obscenely Rude Letters to Donald Trump.”
Donald Trump’s daily insanity inspired it, but the proximate inspiration was a viral post I wrote for Daily Kos. It was titled “Dear F*cking Lunatic: An Open Letter to Donald Trump” and received almost 90,000 Facebook shares, while generating a lot of activity on Twitter and elsewhere.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Nothing too unusual. I drank a lot of high-octane coffee and Red Bull while writing my latest book to get into a Trump-hatin’ trance.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Al Franken influenced me tremendously when it comes to writing political humor. Appearing on his radio show โ and hearing him call my book “hilariously snarky” โ was the professional thrill of my life.
What are you working on now?
Mulling a sequel to “Dear F*cking Lunatic.” Working title: “Dear F*cking Moron: 101 More Rude Letters to Donald Trump.”
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Just started promoting my book. It came out in early April. So far I’ve seen the most success from writing fresh material on Daily Kos.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write for the thrill and joy of it โ and because you have no other choice (you’re a writer). If your book finds sells a ton of copies, that’s just gravy.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t put that peppercorn in your ear.
What are you reading now?
The Human Stain by Philip Roth. (Sometimes I need to get away from the politics of the day.) One book I recently read that inspired me to start writing humor again was “Let’s Pretend This Never Happened” by Jenny Lawson. Brilliant.
What’s next for you as a writer?
More political humor. Got to do it.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Catch-22
Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot
Slaughterhouse-Five
Something really big for lighting signal fires
