About Tracks of a Madman by Stuart McIntyre
When Deputy John Ryan was forced to kill a 12 year old boy in self-defence he had no idea that the incident was only the start of a chain of events that were not only tragic but were a danger to his life also. The boy’s father, Victor Kelly, swore to get his revenge on John but when nothing happened for almost a year, John began to forget about Victor’s threat and get on with his life.
This all changed however when, after work one day, Victor did get revenge on John in a most horrific way. John was forced to watch as Victor and two other men, brutally attacked and murdered his wife Karen right in front of his eyes. After the incident, John handed in his Deputy’s Badge and set out to find Victor and the two men who were responsible for his wife’s death. After six months of searching, John was still unable to track down Victor so he decided to take a break from his search and visit his friend Monevata.
Monevata was a Cheyenne maiden and also a good friend of John’s. John had comforted Monevata when her husband was killed by Comanches when he was out hunting. After telling Monevata about his wife Karen, John’s friend reciprocated by comforting John in return and this intensified the friendship between them. If John thought that his troubles were now over, then he was sadly mistaken. On the day after leaving the Cheyenne village, Monevata was kidnapped by a band of outlaws who had also kidnapped several other Indian women and were intent on selling them to wealthy landowners in Mexico as slaves.
When John Ryan found out about this, he and several of his friends, set out in pursuit of Monevata and the other captives in an effort to free them and return them to their villages. During their search, John found out a piece of news that rocked him to the core. The mission to find and return the captive Indian women was already extremely difficult and very dangerous but on hearing the shocking news, it made the mission even more personal to John Ryan than it already was.
