Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a busy wife and mother of five. During the beginning of the pandemic, I began to tap into myself and figure things that I have always loved to do. During this time my passions for children and writing started to create a new direction for me. I published my first book and a new love for writing children’s book began to be my favorite hobby. I only have one published book at this time but anticipate putting out more in the future.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Roman’s Road: A Journey to Salvation was simply inspired by the children’s ministry I was volunteering with at my church and one of my daughters. My daughter had made the decision to accept salvation and she began to grill me with questions about her decision and faith in God in general. I talk to children and youth a lot about God but this particular time required me to consider that it takes some true effort and thought when having these types of conversations with your own children. Her inquiries sparked a compassion for me to inform children and parents worldwide on salvation and what that conversation should and could look like outside of a person’s church walls.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When I get an idea to write a book about something I find or take pictures to support my ideas that I have in mind. Once I look over an image it helps me flow easier with what I am trying to express in words. In my opinion, this method is what makes me a sure contender to write children’s books.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
To be honest I have not come across a lot of authors that look like me or relate to me in the Christian children’s book world yet. I really love Vashti Harrison’s works and Priscilla Shirer. They both are the examples of how I would like my author platform to be admired one day.
What are you working on now?
Currently I am working on an affirmation book, it is very unorthodox in comparison to most books published similar in concept.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am in process of creating a landing page for readers interested in my current book. I can be found on Instagram and Facebook, but Amazon is the best way to get information about me and my book.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice for new authors is take your time and do not rush the process. It took me one year to research how to self-publish, brand, market and promote yourself as an author. I still am working out the process but because my first book was a passion it is easy to tell others about why I love being an author now.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you have something that you are very passionate about or consider yourself an expert in a particular field write a book about it!!! And live your life chasing your dreams rather than waking up daily regretting that you never tried at all.
What are you reading now?
Currently I am slowly working my way through a book that was given to me for my children called Teaching Your Children Healthy Sexuality by Jim Burns. All of my kids are at impressionable ages with identity and puberty and I want to make sure I get it right with advice and guidance in these areas because I did not have it given to me.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I plan to venture out a bit and get more practice under my belt by freelance writing, attending workshops, illustrator tutorials and possibly beginning to post content on subjects I always wanted to write about. I have been leaning towards vlogging and blogging within the next couple of months. I am not quite ready to publish my next book so I want to use the downtime becoming a better writer.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Tony Evans Commentary Bible, Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, How to Slowly Kill Yourself and Others in America: Essays by Kiese Laymon, and Discerning the Voice of God: How to Recognize When God is Speaking
