Interview With Author V. Walker
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi! I’m V. Walker, a poet, indie author, and interactive fiction developer. For fiction, I like to write romance alongside fantasy, historical fiction, and adventure. My poetry’s overarching themes are the human experience – grief, loss, love, mental health, and more. I’ve just published my first poetry book which releases Feb 1st, 2025: The Fragile Humans We Are: Volume One.
When I’m not writing or reading, I love traveling, playing RPG and simulation games, and doing creative activities. While I enjoy nature and find it beautiful, outside of travel, I’m very much an introverted homebody. I prefer comfy pillows, green tea, and curling up.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest and also my debut poetry collection is titled “The Fragile Humans We Are.” I started conceptualizing this back in 2020 during the pandemic. The pandemic was difficult for everyone. For me personally, I lost my grandfather whom I had a complicated relationship. The title of the book is inspired by
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Hmm. I think unusual is subjective. And I don’t feel like I have habits. I’m like, a go-with-the-flow kind of person. I just write when it feels like it and sometimes I do make myself but there are no habits I follow in particular. I guess I would say I use a very specific pen for writing poetry. It feels wrong not to.
What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m working on my second, longer poetry collection, “What I Know of Love I Learned From Grief.” This WIP is about all the different ways that people grieve—not just death. It is about grieving who you were, the life you could have had, relationships, the person you loved, the time in your life you can’t get back, and so much more.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
At the time of writing this, I joined Threads about three weeks ago and I just hit 300 followers. I would say less than 20 of these are people I know in real life who followed from my Instagram. So, the best advice is to find a social media platform you like and feel comfortable, with and be authentic! Don’t just post about your book or spam people – people want to know the writer too. Support others. Be kind. And on that note, work on building your email newsletter list!!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My one piece of advice is to never self-reject. There are 8 billion people (or however many) in this world – I promise some will reject you. I also promise that some will accept you. But you don’t need to be in the first category. Be authentic and put yourself out there.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
So, I don’t know where this came from and don’t take credit, but I watched a video on Instagram and this guy said that the best thing HE had heard was, “Stick with the plan, not the mood.” I told my therapist about this and she loved it, too. Basically, if you feel like crap, or you’re angry, or [insert emotion], think back to what the plan is. Don’t let those feelings cause you to act irrationally or delay your goals. Persevere!
What’s next for you as a writer?
For now, I really want to focus on publishing my second poetry book. I’ve also recently started a completely free Patreon to help other indie authors and I want to spend some time writing and sharing things there. I love the indie author community and view other authors as friends, not competition. That said, I do want to write a romance novel so I think planning and plotting – possibly being writing later this year.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
This is funny. Don’t ask me why but many, many years ago I ordered the book, “SAS Survival Handbook” by John ‘Lofy’ Wiseman. I still have it today. It’s been like a decade! Let’s just say, this thing is THICK. If I could only take one book, that’s the one. But since I can take a couple more, I would also bring ‘Wuthering Heights’, ‘If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho’, and ‘Because of Winn Dixie.”
