Interview With Author Valeriy Belolis
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a Ukrainian author, psychologist, musician, and lifelong explorer of imagination. I’ve written several books across genres, but The Magical Friendship is the first in my new illustrated children’s series, Tales of Forest Hearts. It’s a 12-story project that weaves together kindness, emotional depth, and gentle magic.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The book is The Magical Friendship (Story 1 of 12 – Tales of Forest Hearts).
It was inspired by the idea that children need stories where wonder meets wisdom — tales that are both emotionally rich and safe, grounded in nature and inner transformation. The forest, the creatures, and the friendship at its heart all grew from that idea.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I often write late at night with classical or ambient music playing in the background.
Before writing a new scene, I imagine it cinematically — as if I’m watching it unfold. This helps me create more vivid emotional depth.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Authors like Astrid Lindgren, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, and even the introspective side of Tolkien have deeply influenced me. I admire stories that speak to both children and the adults they’ll become.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on Tales 2 and 3 in the series — with new adventures, new characters, and a growing magical world. These next stories go deeper into emotional growth and moral courage, while remaining playful and imaginative.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I focus on direct engagement with readers through Amazon, Goodreads, and curated sites for children’s books. But honestly — nothing works better than a beautifully crafted story that people want to share.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write something that matters to you deeply. And once it’s finished — treat it as a product with soul. Edit ruthlessly, publish carefully, and promote it like it deserves to reach someone’s hands.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Don’t write for everyone. Write for the one reader who needs this story right now.”
This changed the way I view storytelling.
What are you reading now?
Mostly children’s classics and mythology, as I work on expanding my series. Also, nonfiction on narrative psychology and emotional development in kids.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Expanding Tales of Forest Hearts into a full-color illustrated book collection — available in both digital and print formats. I’m also planning to launch an audio edition and a complementary podcast.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Little Prince
The Lord of the Rings
Norwegian Wood by Murakami
And something by Borges — just to stay sharp.
