Interview With Author Vic Kerry
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am horror writer from rural Alabama. My day job is as the director of a psychiatric step-down facility. I’ve also been a junior high English teacher and an inpatient psychotherapist. I hold an MFA in writing popular fiction from Seton Hill University and an MS in clinical psychology from the University of South Alabama.
As Vic Kerry, I’ve published five novels, two novellas, and a collection of short stories. “A Place Not Meant to Be” won the 2022 Next Generation Independent Book Award for Novella.
This year under the name V.M. Kerry, I published my first middle-grade horror novel, “The Thirteenth Halloween.”
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
As Vic Kerry, my most recent book is called “I Alone.” It was inspired by a dream I had a long time ago about man forming from a shadow with a huge toothy smile. The book involves a school shooting, which has been an inspiration for works several times as well.
My most recently published book is “The Thirteenth Halloween,” which came out in September of 2024 from Tuxtails Books. It drew inspiration from a short story I wrote for a general submission call and the fairytale of Hansel and Gretel.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t think I have any unusual writing habits. I go to my office and sit in my chair. Then I play a few trivia games to get my mind working. Before you know it, I’m off.
I will say that my cat, Hercules, had decided he has some habits related to my writing. This has only recently started, but when I sit to write, he comes down the stairs, looks at me through the office door and meows. Then he walks in and jumps on the chair’s arm. Next thing he does is climb up my arm to the back of the chair. He rubs his head against my beard. Walks to the other side and does the same thing before walking down my opposite arm onto my desk. He visits behind my laptop and then jumps down to go his own way.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
One of my favorite books is Ray Bradbury’s “Dandelion Wine.” I love that book. Ultimately, I love most everything by Bradbury. He had a way of capturing the vitality of youth. I’m a pretty good mimic of Lovecraft. I enjoy Poe in small doses. I really like Stephen King’s early short stories, especially “Strawberry Spring.”
What are you working on now?
I don’t talk about my WIP, but I’m currently not really working on anything. I just finished writing another middle-grade book, so I’m in the doldrums between projects.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I really have no idea. If you know, please tell me.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
You got to write. You got to read. You got to get thick sick because rejection can sting. Take a writing class or two. They will help you in the long run. Lastly, don’t take yourself too seriously.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Sit you butt in the chair and write.
What are you reading now?
I’m on a James Bond kick. As of the writing of this sentence, I’m finishing up “From Russia With Love.” So far this year I’ve also read: “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,” “Diamonds are Forever,” and “Moonraker.” I don’t read Ian Fleming back-to-back. I’m also in the middle of Bernie Taupin’s autobiography “Scattershot.” The last Audible book I finished was “Blood Sugar” by Daniel Kraus.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Writing. Isn’t that what’s always next for us? I have some ideas in my head, but I don’t talk about them while I’m in the process of preparing to write. It’s a superstition that I have.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
“Dandelion Wine”
“Night Shift” by Stephen King
the collected works of Shakespeare
I know that book titles do not go in quotation marks, but you can’t italicize them in this format.
