Interview With Author Victoria Preston
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hello Bookwyrms, I am an indie Author in NW Ohio and a certified crazy dragon lady. I’ve written the Achilles Maestri series which is heavily laden with magic and dragons. I’ve published seven different books in differing genres from Horror, to Dark Romance and Thrillers but my heart belongs with Sci-Fi/Fantasy.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Witches’ Golem was recently released for Halloween. The Dark Romantasy is about a Witch named Liviana Ravencroft that creates her own soulmate in the form of a Golem she calls Adam and a relentless Vampiric Demon (Agarath) with Stockholm Syndrome fighting for her affection. The storyline counts down to midnight on Samhain as the reader progresses. I found inspiration in classic horror. There is a Frankenstein’s Monster-Esque vibe in creating Adam with the undying love of a Dracula-type lover in Agarath, and a certain Cthulhu addition that gives the book its brazen edge.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I have always preferred pen to paper rather than typing. The first book of the Achilles Maestri series is over 400 pages, and the rough draft was written entirely by hand. My OCD tendencies require me to write with a fine-tip sharpie pen and if I make a mistake, I have to start the page over to please the writing gods.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Cornelia Funke and Garth Nix were heavy influences as I was growing up. Especially the Abhorsen series, Inkheart, and the Reckless series. The deep world building and true fantasy was so captivating. It instilled a craving in me to bring more magic into the world. To be able to give others a world to escape to when the real one feels too heavy to carry is a true gift.
What are you working on now?
Currently I am working on the third book of the Achilles Maestri series. I am self-publishing the first two books in 2026 after a decision to become a fully independent Author. I started writing this series 15 years ago while raising my son and plan to add to it throughout my career. Like a true never-ending story. All of my wildest dreams come to life with dragons, pirates, magic, sword fighting, knighthood, dwarves, and time travel based in a medieval era.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
As a Local Indie Author I have found success in sticking to who I am and promoting that as my brand. Being part of my community, hosting local events and collaborating with local businesses has helped me branch out. I also create and share content to Facebook reading groups that fit the genre or audience of my books.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write what is true to you and what you know. You’ll find the words flow best when you are in your own element. Playing instrumental background music that matches the feel you are going for can help deepen your focus when writing. Envision the scene as it unfolds in your mind and write what you see. Scents, lighting, sounds, changes in weather and season can add layers to your story. When creating characters try to remember that people have fears, quirks and flaws. They make mistakes and decisions that aren’t always logical and shape their reality as time goes on.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you’re writing and get stuck on a word or sentence, instead of staring at the page with writer’s block, put in parenthesis the general idea and move on. When editing the rough draft, a lot of those missing words or sentences come to you as you fall back into the rhythm of the scene.
What are you reading now?
I have been reading the Hobbit, a classic and a comfort read. By reading, I mean I am listening to the Audiobook while doing the walk to the Lonely Mountain challenge. If anyone tells you that Audiobooks don’t count, neither do their ancestor’s stories they shared verbally for ages.
What’s next for you as a writer?
After working on many mixed genre side quests, I am returning my full attention to Science Fiction and Fantasy. I plan to do more events in the future but for now I want to immerse myself in this next project.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would choose 4 fresh notebooks and hope I didn’t run out of ink or else I would become an octopuses’ worst enemy.
