Interview With Author Vincent Nolan
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an author with a deep passion for creating suspenseful, emotionally charged stories that often blend romance, thrill, and intense character development. So far, I’ve written five books, with more in the works. My published works include the What the Hell series, which explores complex relationships, personal struggles, and unexpected twists, as well as other projects that dive into psychological and emotional themes. Writing allows me to craft worlds where I can explore the intricacies of human emotions and actions, all while keeping readers on the edge of their seats.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is titled What the Hell Did We Do? It’s the third installment in the What the Hell series. The inspiration for this book came from my desire to explore the consequences of unresolved relationships and the ripple effects of past actions. I wanted to delve deeper into the emotional complexities of the characters, especially Amelia and Vincent, and how their choices—both good and bad—impact their future. The tension between love, loyalty, and betrayal is central to the story, and it’s what keeps driving the plot forward.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
One of my more unusual writing habits is that I like to draft scenes out of order. I don’t always follow the linear progression of the story—if I’m particularly inspired by a climactic moment or a key emotional scene, I’ll write that first and then build the rest of the narrative around it. Another quirk is that I often write late at night when it’s quiet, as I find the stillness helps me get deeper into my characters’ minds. Plus, I like to listen to instrumental music while writing—it helps set the mood for whatever scene I’m working on.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Several authors have influenced my writing, especially those who excel at blending suspense with emotional depth. Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl had a significant impact on me; her ability to create complex, flawed characters in tense, gripping situations is something I strive for. I also draw inspiration from the emotional intensity of Nicholas Sparks’ novels, where love and heartache are deeply intertwined. Another major influence is Harlan Coben, whose thrillers are masterful in keeping readers guessing while developing relatable, human characters. These authors have shaped how I approach storytelling, particularly in how I build tension and craft emotional arcs.
What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m working on a romantic suspense novel titled The Promise I Broke. It follows the story of Emily, an HR manager who is engaged to Ethan but finds herself conflicted over unresolved feelings for her ex, Bryce McCoy. Bryce unexpectedly reappears in her life, and the emotional turmoil that follows threatens to unravel her current relationship. The book explores themes of love, loyalty, and the consequences of past choices. It’s a story that dives deep into Emily’s internal struggle as she navigates between what she wants and what’s expected of her.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My best method for promoting my books has been using Instagram, especially through reels and visually engaging content. I focus on sharing compelling excerpts, emotional moments from the story, and creating a connection with readers by providing behind-the-scenes insights into my writing process. Instagram’s Bookstagram community is incredibly supportive, and reels have the potential to go viral, which helps increase visibility. I also use Amazon ads to target readers who are interested in similar genres, and Goodreads to connect with readers and gather reviews. Building an engaged social media presence has been key in driving interest and sales.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice for new authors is to focus on consistency and perseverance. Writing a book can feel overwhelming, but breaking it down into smaller, manageable goals will help you stay on track. Don’t get discouraged by self-doubt—every writer faces it at some point. Also, don’t be afraid to write imperfectly in your first draft; you can always revise later. Another important tip is to read widely, especially in your genre, to understand what resonates with readers. Lastly, build your author platform early by engaging with your audience on social media, because connecting with readers is just as important as writing your book.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve ever heard is, “Write the story you want to read.” This resonated with me because it reminds me to stay true to my own creative vision rather than trying to fit into trends or expectations. When you’re passionate about the story you’re telling, that authenticity shines through and connects with readers. It also keeps the writing process enjoyable and fulfilling, even during the challenging moments. This advice has kept me grounded and focused on crafting stories that I truly care about.
What are you reading now?
Currently, I’m reading *The Silent Patient* by Alex Michaelides. I’m captivated by its psychological twists and the exploration of trauma and relationships.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Next, I plan to finish *The Promise I Broke* and start brainstorming ideas for my next project. I’m also focusing on building my author platform and exploring new marketing strategies to reach a wider audience. Continuing to engage with readers and growing my skills as a storyteller are top priorities for me.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
If I were stranded on a desert island, I would bring:
1. What the Hell Did We Do? – My own book, of course, to revisit the emotional journey of my characters.
2. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald – A classic that beautifully explores themes of love, ambition, and the American dream.
3. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern – Its enchanting and imaginative storytelling would keep me captivated.
4. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens – A rich narrative that combines mystery and a deep connection to nature, perfect for island life.
