Interview With Author Walker Zupp
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a Bermudian writer who specialises in speculative fiction with sci-fi elements. I studied English Language and Creative Writing at Lancaster University, received my MA in Creative Writing from Lancaster University, and received my PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Exeter. I have published two novels traditionally – Martha (2020) and Nakadai (2022) – one self-published novel called Jiggery Pokery (2022), and am waiting for my fourth novel, Fibber, to be released by Montag Press on 1st February 2024.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Fibber, due to be released by Montag Press on 1st February 2024, is a speculative novel about a poet who gets sentenced to be a bureaucrat in a giant stone head posing as a refuge for poor people, when it is in fact something more sinister. The novel was inspired by The Fountain Pit by Andrei Plantov, a Soviet-era satirical novel.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I think the only unusual thing is that I write at all! No matter what has happened in my life, you can always tack on the line, “…and Walker just kept writing.”
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I read widely and have been influenced by Naomi Klein’s “Shock Doctrine”, Joel Kotkin’s “The Coming Rise of Neo-Feudalism”, the writing of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, James Baldwin, William S. Burroughs, Norman Mailer, Philip K. Dick, D.H. Lawrence, Ian Marter’s and Terrance Dick’s Doctor Who novelisations, and the poetry of Philip Larkin, E.E.Cummings, Emily Dickinson, and George Herbert.
What are you working on now?

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep writing, keep submitting. Try and get 500 words a day.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Good writing gets published.
What are you reading now?
The Rainbow by D.H. Lawrence.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Try and get through next year.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
