Author Bio:
Raymond G. Boland is a 30-year Army veteran with two tours of duty in Vietnam. While there, he flew U1-A Otter utility airplanes to remote Special Forces camps. Ray also flew AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters as a unit commander in the 101st Division.
Born in Chicago, Ill. in 1937, Ray moved with his family to Friendship, Wis., following his high school graduation in 1955. He became a public-school teacher and taught at several rural central Wisconsin schools. Ray enlisted as a private in the Wisconsin Army National Guard in 1956 and was called to active-duty in 1961 during the Berlin Crisis. He remained on active-duty until his retirement as a Colonel in 1991. Ray earned a Master of Science Degree in Communications from Shippensburg State University, Pa., and is a graduate of the Army War College. His military awards include the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, The Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the Meritorious Service Medal.
Following military service, Ray completed a second career in Wisconsin State Government as the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and retired in 2003. He resides with his wife Donna in Sparta, Wis.
