About When We Pause
Dr. Rytter has chosen storytelling for this book to teach about central issues in the lives of children with disabilities. Her real-life characters educate as When We Pause introduces you to them. First, meet Matthew, a little boy who is unable to speak, walk, or even sit up independently. Quickly, you get caught up in his parents’ challenges and delight in discovering their son hidden behind a severe disability. These parents then work to convince the world that their remarkable boy indeed not only has a brain but a sparky sense of humor. They can’t do this alone. So, meet their friends who support this family through the trials of raising Matthew in our society that weeds out anyone who is different. Don’t despair, because there are dandelions and mud, clouds in the sky, choices in the grocery store, the first day of Kindergarten, and communication without words. From scene to scene, Dr. Rytter presents vital information and concepts through her characters in a way that is both noteworthy and reality-based. Because she has cerebral palsy, Dr. Rytter has “walked Matthew’s walk.” Who else could create this one of a kind novel? Dr. Rytter’s message is full of hope for any parent, but she captures the authenticity of dealing with a severe disability, ignorant people, and the complexity of having some normalcy.
