Interview With Author Winter Warleggan
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Winter Warleggan, and I’m a fantasy author with a deep love for storytelling that blends magic, emotion, and power. I started writing when I was still in high school, driven by a fascination with kings, queens, and the kind of worlds where anything is possible — as long as you’re brave enough to imagine it.
Where the Crown Fell is my debut novel and the first book in a two-part series. It’s a story that’s been growing with me for years, and finally bringing it to life has been a dream come true. I write stories that let readers escape, connect, and feel — all through a fantasy lens.
This is my first published book, but certainly not my last. The second installment is already in the works.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I started writing Where the Crown Fell when I was 17, still in high school. I’ve always been drawn to fantasy — kings, queens, magic — the kind of worlds that feel just out of reach but still deeply human. Growing up, I was obsessed with Harry Potter. It wasn’t just a book to me; it was a place I could disappear into.
Reading has always been an escape — not to run away, but to imagine more. I’d find myself so immersed in the stories I read, I’d daydream about stepping into them, living in those worlds, becoming part of something bigger than reality.
I’m also a hopeless romantic. I love writing about emotion — love, heartbreak, loyalty — but through a fantasy lens. I want my characters to feel real, even when their world isn’t.
Writing gives me a place to dream, to explore, to be free. It’s not real — but it feels real while I’m doing it. And that’s what keeps me coming back.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’d say yes — but maybe only other writers would think they’re unusual!
I often write in bursts, not in perfectly timed sessions. Inspiration hits me randomly — sometimes late at night, sometimes in the middle of doing something completely unrelated — so I always keep notes on my phone. I’ve written entire scenes on buses, in the dark, half-asleep, or during conversations (sorry to my friends!).
I also tend to write emotionally first. If I feel strongly about a moment — even if it happens later in the story — I’ll write it out of order and worry about structure later. I build from the heart and organize after.
Music plays a huge role too. I’ll loop one song for hours if it puts me in the right headspace for a specific mood or character.
So no candles or typewriters — just chaotic energy, playlists, and a need to get the feelings out before they fade.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The Harry Potter series had a huge impact on me growing up. It was the first time I truly got lost in a world that felt both magical and real — where the emotions, friendships, and challenges hit just as hard as the spells. J.K. Rowling’s ability to build a rich world while still grounding it in relatable characters made me want to write stories that did the same.
Beyond that, I’m inspired by any author who creates immersive, character-driven fantasy — books where the stakes are emotional as well as epic. I’m drawn to stories with flawed heroes, complex villains, and choices that come at a cost.
I wouldn’t say I try to write like anyone else — but books that make me feel something deeply, that let me disappear into another world, are always the ones that leave a mark on my writing.
What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m working on the second part of Where the Crown Fell book. The first book laid the foundation — the world, the politics, the personal stakes — and now I’m diving even deeper. The next installment will push the characters further, raise the emotional and magical stakes, and reveal secrets that have been simmering beneath the surface.
This part of the story is more intense, more personal, and definitely more dangerous for the people caught in it. I’m focused on making sure the payoff is worth it — for the characters and for the readers who’ve joined me on this journey.
I’m also exploring a few ideas for future projects — still in the fantasy realm, but with different tones and themes. For now, though, finishing this series is my top priority.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far, the best method has been building direct connections with readers — whether that’s through social media, word of mouth, or personal messages. Instagram, Facebook and TikTok have been great for sharing visuals, snippets, and connecting with the book community. That face-to-face engagement (even digitally) helps people care about the story behind the story.
As for websites, I’ve found that book promotion platforms like BookGoodies can be really effective — especially when combined with a price promo or launch strategy. I also have an author website and I can see it has had some engagement.
But honestly, there’s no one magic site. What works best is showing up consistently, sharing your passion, and being authentic — because people don’t just buy books, they support people they connect with.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Start. Don’t wait until it’s perfect. Don’t wait until you feel “ready.” Just start writing — and keep going. The first draft doesn’t have to be flawless. It just has to exist.
Be patient with yourself. Writing a book takes time, and finishing it is already a huge achievement. Don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s — every writer moves at their own pace.
Also: write what you care about. Not what you think will sell or what’s trending. If it matters to you, it’ll matter to someone else too.
And when it comes time to share your work — be brave. You’re putting a piece of yourself out there, and that’s powerful. Feedback is part of the process, not a reflection of your worth.
Lastly, don’t stop at one book. Keep writing. Keep creating. Your voice only gets stronger the more you use it.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You have talent, polish your work and get it out there. The universe will do its thing. I live by that.
What are you reading now?
I am currently reading A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J Maas.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Right now, my focus is on finishing the second and final book in the Where the Crown Fell series.
After that, I’m excited to explore new stories. I have a few ideas already — still in the fantasy genre, but with different characters, new worlds, and even deeper emotional layers. Some are darker, some more romantic, but all still carry that blend of magic and humanity that I love to write.
Long term, I want to keep growing — as a storyteller, as a creator, and as someone who connects with readers through the worlds I build. This is just the beginning.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Definitely the Harry Potter Series! I have read them a million times but I can never get tired of them.
