Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Y. Daher is author based in Toronto, Canada. He had a passion for writing and reading since he was a child. Although he would make up many stories and characters in his mind, he never had the courage to put them on paper. All of that changed in his junior year when he had to hand out a literary essay based on his favorite T.V series: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. His teacher told him it was a great work, but wasn’t surprised since she always knew Daher was a great writer and was surprised he hadn’t written anything yet. He let that statement sink in and thought; why not? Two years later and he published his first book: Raw Kingdom which is available on E-Book and paperback.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is also the first of a series in which I was working for a long time. It was loosely inspired from my own experience dealing with the fact that I’ve been accustomed to one particular way of life, and as I grew older and started to realize the hard truths of life, I thought to myself; this can’t be it! This can’t be who I am! I’m can’t be defined by what surrounds me, surely I’m more than that. And that was the start of my journey of self-discovery. A journey that Khadir will also partake in his adventure in Djadzele.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to be very inconsistent in how much writing I get done. But that isn’t due to laziness or procrastination. I will write as much as ideas flow into my head. I almost never write just for the sake of writing, I need to make sure that what I write has a strong substance so that when its time to edit, I won’t be looking at my screen asking if what sort of substance I consumed writing this.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
This may come as a surprise, but a lot of my inspiration comes from comic book style of writing. Particularly those of the late 70s to the late 90s. Don Mcgregor and Christopher Priest were among my favorites to read (particularly because I’m a huge Black panther fan).
A lot of the writing style I used in Raw Kingdom was inspired by the earlier solo BP stories such as Panther’s rage and my favorite: Panther’s quest. But my biggest inspiration is Ta Nehisi Coates, responsible for masterpieces such as Between the world and me and We were eight years in power. And the fact that he also contributed to BP run sealed it for me.
What are you working on now?
Right now I’m drafting the sequel of Raw Kingdom, which will delve deeper into the world of Djadzele and introduce Khadir to part of the world he thought he would never see, let alone, exist.
