Interview With Author Yewande Akinse
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written three poetry books titled, “The rise and fall of rhymes and rhythms” (2025), “A tale of being, of green and of ing” (2019) and Voices: A collection of poems that tell stories (2016).
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My most recent collection of 100 poems is titled, “The rise and fall of rhymes and rhythms.” This poetry collection was inspired by my daughter and is dedicated to children everywhere. The book contains excellent illustrations by Mema Daisy. Written as a dizain (10 lines, 10 syllables per line), the poems dance at a delicate edge where poetry meets music.
“The rise and fall of rhymes and rhythms” is a book of lessons, instruction and knowledge transfer from one generation to another.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No. My writing habits are pretty random, I sit at my desk, typing one word after another until the body of work is complete. It’s that easy and that hard.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have been heavily influenced by African writers and poets. The works of Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, Buchi Emecheta, Cyprian Ekwensi, Femi Osofisan to mention but a few. These writers and more have shaped my writing and were a great inspiration for me while growing up.
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on releasing two chapbooks in the near future, a break from full length poetry collections.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
What works best for me is X (formerly Twitter). X boasts of a vibrant writing and creative community. I have found success promoting my books on X.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I hope that you keep writing. I hope it sets you free.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Don’t be ‘a writer’. Be writing.” – William Faulkner
What are you reading now?
Currently reading “The Almanack of Naval Ravikant” A guide to wealth and happiness by Eric Jorgenson.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I am currently in the process of book promotion and marketing in a bid to get the word out on my recent release. I am also simultaneously writing two chapbooks. Wish me luck!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I will go along with The Holy Bible. It’s the only book I’ll need while stranded.
