Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My life story isn’t all that interesting. I just got it in my head to take a shot at a writing career, and after several years of writing, I finally managed to produce a novel worth bringing to market.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Refusing Excalibur is the title of my first novel. I was inspired by my love of space opera, space battles, and fast-paced story telling.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m trying to make a living as a science fiction novelist. Does that count?”
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Well, my favorite book is Frank Herbert’s Dune, which is probably why I couldn’t resist inserting an Emperor in Refusing Excalibur.
Probably the most important book I read in regards to my writing style is Stephen King’s On Writing. It was instrumental in helping me develop a clear and effective writing style.
And I should also mention John Scalzi. I try very hard to emulate his ability to write books that are accessible but not dumb.
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on a military science fiction novel centered around one of my favorite science fiction tropes. The space fighter!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still figuring that out, but so far just earning good reviews has been the biggest help in driving book sales.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Hire an editor, they pay for themselves.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The secret to writing is writing.
What are you reading now?
I just finished the Way of Kings, the first book in the Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Finishing the military science fiction novel I mentioned above.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Dune, The Forever War, Old Man’s War, and The Martian.
