Interview With Author zachery williams
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi, my name is Zachery Williams. I’m a passionate storyteller, poet, and podcast host who believes in the power of words to heal, inspire, and connect. My work focuses on themes of love, resilience, self-discovery, and the struggles we face in everyday life. Writing has been my way of making sense of the world and helping others feel seen, understood, and valued.
So far, I’ve written one poetry book, “Dear You”, and co-authored “Through the Moon Lynite” with Jahnasia Smalls. Each of these projects holds a special place in my heart, as they reflect personal experiences and offer hope and encouragement to others.
In addition to my writing, I host the Just 2 Us Podcast, where I share open and honest conversations about life’s challenges, personal growth, and the human experience. Whether through poetry, stories, or podcasting, my goal is always to connect with people and remind them that they’re never alone in their journey.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Memory updated
The name of my latest book is “Dear You.”
This poetry collection was inspired by the raw and unspoken emotions we all experience—love, loss, healing, and the journey of self-discovery. “Dear You” is a deeply personal and heartfelt project, written as a series of letters to the reader, exploring life’s highs and lows.
What inspired this book was the idea that so many of us go through similar struggles but rarely put those feelings into words. I wanted to create a space where readers could feel seen, understood, and reminded that they’re never alone. This book is my love letter to anyone seeking hope, healing, and a connection to their own journey.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wouldn’t say my writing habits are unusual, but they’re definitely unique to me. I tend to write best late at night or in the early hours of the morning when everything is quiet and still. It’s in those moments that my thoughts feel clearest, and I can really connect with what I want to say.
Sometimes, I play music that matches the mood of what I’m writing—anything from soulful ballads to instrumental tracks. It helps me tap into the emotion I’m trying to convey. Other times, I’ll jot down random lines or ideas on my phone throughout the day, no matter where I am.
One thing that might seem unusual is that I like to “talk” to my work as I write—reading lines aloud to hear how they flow or tweaking phrases until they feel just right. It’s like having a conversation with the page.
For me, writing isn’t just about the words—it’s about the energy I bring to the process and making sure that energy translates into something real for the reader.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve been deeply inspired by authors like Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Audre Lorde, Gwendolyn Brooks, Rita Dove, and Lucille Clifton. Their words carry raw power, authenticity, and a deep connection to the human experience.
Langston Hughes’ rhythm and storytelling, Maya Angelou’s resilience and strength, and Audre Lorde’s unapologetic voice have all shaped how I approach my own writing. Gwendolyn Brooks taught me how to find beauty in everyday struggles, while Rita Dove and Lucille Clifton showed me the impact of simplicity and precision in poetry.
Books like I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou and The Collected Poems of Langston Hughes have left a lasting mark on me, reminding me of the importance of vulnerability, truth, and using your voice to inspire others.
These authors have shown me the power of storytelling to heal, empower, and connect, and they continue to influence my work every day.
What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m working on two exciting projects. The first is my second poetry book, which will continue to explore themes of love, healing, and self-reflection in a way that resonates deeply with readers. Poetry is such a personal and powerful medium for me, and I’m thrilled to dive even deeper into this creative journey.
The second is a fiction storytelling book—a project that allows me to craft compelling characters and narratives while exploring the complexities of life and relationships. Writing fiction is a new challenge, but it’s one I’m passionate about because it lets me expand my creativity and connect with readers in a whole new way.
Both of these projects are close to my heart, and I’m excited to share them with the world soon.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve found success promoting my books through social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, where I can connect directly with my readers and build a community. Additionally, platforms like Amazon KDP and Goodreads are excellent tools for reaching new audiences. My podcast, Just 2 Us Podcast, also allows me to share insights and snippets of my work, creating a personal connection with listeners who may become readers.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write with authenticity and let your voice shine through. Stay consistent, even when it feels hard, and don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s. Build a community, whether it’s through social media, writing groups, or collaborations. Most importantly, don’t fear feedback—it’s the key to growth.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Your voice matters, and there’s someone out there who needs to hear your story.” This reminded me that even if my words only impact one person, it’s worth writing them.
What are you reading now?
I’m currently revisiting The Collected Poems of Langston Hughes and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. These works always inspire me to dig deeper into my craft.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m focused on completing my second poetry book and my fiction storytelling book. Beyond that, I plan to explore more creative avenues, collaborate with other authors, and continue growing my podcast audience to connect with even more readers.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Collected Poems of Langston Hughes
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
A Promised Land by Barack Obama
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
