Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Arthur Daigle, avid reader and first time author. My hobbies include gardening, drawing and most recently writing. I got into writing gradually. When I went to college I had to write papers for every class except math and gym. Over time I found that I liked writing, and judging by the favorable grades I was pretty good at it. At that I began writing some of my own stories. I went to a writers’ group at my local library for 2 1/2 years before the group folded when the members drifted away.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I have recently published my first novel titled William Bradshaw, King of the Goblins. The story is a blend of comedy and fantasy, where the title character is tricked by lawyers into ruling a kingdom of goblins on another planet. His new followers are short, stupid and a little crazy, and they obey him when they feel like it. Will has to be their king until he can find a loophole in his king contract. That quickly becomes the least of his problems when he accidentally starts a war. Now he has to win the war if he’s going to live long enough to escape his contract. The problem is, goblins haven’t won a war in recorded history, and they have no intention of starting now.
The book was inspired by several sources including the puppeteer and film maker Jim Henson, the british artist Brian Froud, and several fantasy role playing games. Basically goblins are pushovers in most books and games, being mowed down by heroes on their way to bigger threats. I wanted to see what life looked like for the cannon fodder, making them sympathetic and showing that the big guys can be taken down with humor and style.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
There are times when I can write for hours a days and weeks on end, producing work I’m happy with that requires few changes afterwards. Other times I can’t seem to put two words together. Both on and off periods can go on for some time, and I’ve no idea what causes them.
One thing I have found helpful in coming up with new ideas is taking long walks. I grab a plastic bag to pick up recyclables and head out on walks that take 40 to 80 minutes. I find that I come up with all sorts of ideas during these walks. Not all of it is usable on the book I’m writing, but I still get lots of good ideas.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m a fan of David Weber and his Honor series. Terry Pratchett and his disk world series is another favorite. I also read a lot of fantasy role playing game books by many different authors.
What are you working on now?
I’ve got a sequel to the book ready to go, and I’m working on more books for the series.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far I’m working with GoodReads. I’m looking for more sites, especially blog book reviewers.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I’m a new author and I’ll take all the advice I can get!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Keep trying.
I know that’s nothing mind-blowing, but it’s true. You’ll lose a lot of fights before you win. When life knocks you down you have to just keep getting up.
What are you reading now?
Oddly enough neither fantasy nor comedy. I’m working on some gardening books I got for Christmas. Reading this is enjoyable, but I also feel that an author should do as much reading outside his field as possible. You find out all sorts of useful facts this way that you can use in your story. Histories and biographies are also good for generating interesting ideas for your book.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Right now I’m trying to market my book, which is proving much harder than writing it was. I’m doing more writing for my series as well.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Going Postal by Terry Pratchett.
