Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an independent fiction writer born and raised in Derbyshire in the U.K.
I still live there with my wife, son and gentle, yet simple minded, retired greyhound.
My love for books came at a very early age and has never ceased. Writing was a later development, although not by much. My first memory of writing stories was on an old typewriter with half of the keys missing.
Apart from writing and reading, I enjoy sports, particularly the very English sport of cricket. I’ve never given up on the hope that one day I’ll get a call from the English chairman of selectors.
“Dave, we’ve got a problem. Can you get down to Lords and open the batting?”
“I’ll just finish writing this chapter, then I’ll be there.”
I’ve written four books so far but hard at work on my fifth. My first book was a thriller, The Swimmer, my second a contemporary fiction/ coming of age book. I was particularly pleased to have that book The Boy Who Kissed The Sky chosen as a bookclub read on the Amazon UK kindle forum on Good reads.
My last two have been Victorian horror novellas
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest is called Ballet of the Bones. In some ways its a follow up to the previous book, Mask of the Macabre. They are both old style Victorian horror stories. My cover designer did a fantastic job in creating a Penny Dreadful feel.
I’ve always loved the old fashioned creepy stories. The People imagery and prose is very inspiring although I’ve made them a little more accessible for the modern reader.
In essence each book contains four short stories but they all link together like a jigsaw so you see the final picture at the end. It creates a novella length book. Hugely enjoyable to write and hopefully read!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. Although recently I was on a roll with the words flowing readily. I put this down to my lucky socks. I refused to wear any others until they were physically taken from me. After a week they smelled pretty bad!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love to read, like most of us who write. I have lots of influences but the writer I enjoy most is John Irving. His stories are so epic and beautiful. Stephen King is also someone I admire. Both brilliant story tellers.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on another Victorian/Gothic tale. This one will be much longer than the previous two when finished. It’s dark, atmospheric and creepy. The Victorians were obsessed with death and research has been interesting, not to say inspiring!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
That’s something I’ve struggled with. The competition is fierce and there are so many good quality writers out there. Getting noticed is very difficult. I have a website and all the normal social media sites. I’ve found just interacting on forums to be the best idea. Sites like Good reads, Kindle Users Forum and Kindleboards. I’ve tried paid promotion on a small scale and its never paid off.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write, write write! Keep going, keep getting better and GET AN EDITOR!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Dave, you really need to get an editor!
What are you reading now?
An Odd Quartet by Michael Brookes
What’s next for you as a writer?
Getting this next horror story finished. Then have a think about which direction I want to go. I love writing horror and I have plenty of ideas!
What is your favorite book of all time?
A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
